Komentaryos/Notes
This domain is based on conversations between Eliezer Bivas and Nesi Altaras (grandfather and grandson), and Izzet Bana and Nesi Altaras, all speakers from Istanbul. It was edited by Rachel Bortnick (Izmir).
Borekas: borekas and burekas are both ways to call the delicious (we are not objective!) savory, flaky, and stuffed pastry which has become iconic of Sephardic cuisine. It comes from the Turkish börek.
borekas is more common in Istanbul.
burekas is more common in Izmir and Salonika.
To like/to be pleasing: plazer and agradar are both verbs with the meaning 'to be pleasing.'
plazer is more common in Istanbul.
agradar is more common in Izmir.
It is grammatically correct to conjugate these verbs in the plural when the subject is plural (i.e. Te plazen koftes?), but colloquially it's more common to keep plaze or agrada in the singular even with plural nouns (i.e. Te plaze koftes?).
"Azeremos"
Notice that in Ladino, we use the second personal plural future tense (literally "we will ____") to mean "let's _____!"
